Pictured Rocks celebrated its 50th anniversary in May of 2011. The first summer camp included five full weeks and ministered to 291 campers, youth and adults. The camp was the dream and result of designers Rev. Morris Steffenson and Rev. Ellis Webb.

Over the last 50 years, Pictured Rocks has had as many as 700 and as few as 220 UM summer campers. Early volunteer camp managers/program directors included Arvin Woeste, Rev. Herb Schaffer and Charlene Engleking. Since 1985 (and the change to paid site directors) the camp has been led by Mick Rosenau, Kent Chittenden, Steve Kalb, Rev. David Bracht-Wagner and Gary Wilson. Today, Pictured Rocks has about 350 UM summer campers and rents out several weeks of summer camp to outside hosted groups.

Pictured Rocks Camp is owned and operated by the Iowa Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church with its headquarters located in Des Moines. The IA UM Conference has owned and operated as many as seven camps throughout Iowa. Today, they still own and operate ministry programs here at Pictured Rocks Camp in Monticello, Wesley Woods Camp in Indianola and Lake Okoboji Camp in Spirit Lake.
