With phase one, a new roof and kitchen equipment and improvement upgrades, completed, Pictured Rocks is ready for phase two of the project. The main goal of the project is to modernize, improve the efficiency and accessibility of Timbercrest while ensuring it remains as the central hub for camping ministry at Pictured Rocks. This spring, the east bedrooms (current ladies room and bath) will be changed into the Timbercrest Annex. This would include constructing a new covered deck off this part of the building and changing the bedrooms with a joint bathroom into two separate bedrooms with private bathrooms.
This summer, many of the weeklong Adventure Specialty Camps will use this space as lodging and the covered deck as their meeting space. In the retreat season, this space could be used independently or as lodging for a guest speaker, pastor or family with young children who just deserve some more private space away from the big group lodging in either Cornwell Lodge or our rustic cabins.
Better insulation will also be added to the attic space above, energy efficient lighting will be added and there will no longer be an emergency exit coming out of the restroom! An interesting modification will be that the bathroom sink will be placed outside the bathroom itself to speed up the morning and bedtime sink rush.
Phase three will include renovations to the west side of the building where a new handicap friendly entrance will be constructed via the old men’s restrooms. A small covered porch will also be added to clearly mark the new main entrance and provide protection from the elements as guest use the facility. The once shared men’s restroom will become the main hallway. The north bedroom will become restrooms (men’s, ladies, and a family/ADA restroom) as well a utility room and storage area. The south side bedroom will become the serving area and will allow for the removal of the noisy ice machine, beverage station with underneath refrigerator, buffet tables etc. all to be removed from the dining area itself. A door way will also be cut into the kitchen to allow the food service staff to prepare and set out the meals without interrupting a meeting or event taking place in the dining area.
Phase four will be the renovation of the dining area itself, which will include a new ceiling with better and more energy efficient lighting, new insulated walls to reduce noise from the kitchen and bedrooms and more energy efficient windows. The new storage area will allow us to re-open the south side of the dining area which was the old camp store which will allow more natural light and a cross breeze when the air conditioning is not needed.
Phase five, the final phase will be the exterior. This will include a new exterior insulation, a building wrap and new exterior siding to help protect the building and improve the buildings efficiency, appearance and longevity as the ministry center of Pictured Rocks Camp.
